Blackhawks Decorate Chicago; What’s Up, Philly? Hawks, Flyers Posters Available Here

June 2, 2010

Well, we are finally here. After 82 regular season games, plus 16 and 17 playoff games respectably, the Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers have made it to the big show, the Stanley Cup Finals. Both teams are now in for the fight of their lives, for the greatest achievement in all of Hockey, to hoist Lord Stanleys Cup.

While this is a massively important event for both cities, one has stepped up to the plate more than the other.

Chicago has full on Stanley Cup fever. They have taken 2 of the cities most famous and memorable statues and decked them out in Blackhawks gear. The two statues that I am speaking of are the Michael Jordan in front of the United Center and the Lion in front of the Art Institute of Chicago. These pieces have made nation wide news and a focal point for hockey lovers far and wide.

Michael Jordan adorns a red Toews jersey and a while helmet.

After 2 games, and 2 wins by the Blackhawks, it seems that this publicity stunt may have sparked something. The Flyers seems flat and frustrated, while the Hawks have clearly been the dominant team.

While the lion is wearing a custom made over sized Blackhawks helmet.

With the series now going back to Philly can the high skill level of the Hawks be enough to take complete control of the series? Or will the sea of orange be enough to ignite a flame in the Flyers game. Only time will tell, but from where I am sitting being a Blackhawk is a pretty good thing right about now.

Cristiano Ronaldo

The worlds most popular player, Cristiano Ronaldo, is having another incredible year. With 7 goals in 6 Champions league matches and an incredible 26 in Liga Española division 1 this year, he is once again top of the football world.  There is no current player that invokes as much excitement world wide as Ronaldo.

Kaka

Another ultra popular player is Kaka. His fame is increasing by the minute. Kaka has played for the biggest names in football, from A.C. Milan to Real Madrid, where he now makes his home.

Raul

Raul is the longest serving player in Real Madrid history. Having played 741 matches for Los Blancos since 1994, it isn’t hard to see why he is so loved by Real Madrid fans. On top of playing the most matches, he also holds the title for the most goals ever scored while wearing the white, with 322.

Estadio Santiago Bernabéu is celebrating its 63rd year as the home of Real Madrid. Over the years, the 80,000+ seat stadium has seen Real Madrid win 5 Champions league titles, as well as 3 Spanish cups.

Thierry Henry

Thierry Henry is not only the face of FC Barcelona, but he is one of the top forwards in all of football over the past decade. He might just be the most dangerous player in the world in one-on-one situations. His ability to score in these situations strikes fear into the hearts of opposing players and fans alike.

Tennis Girl 1976 Poster – Photographer Martin Elliott (1947-2010), RIP

April 14, 2010

“Tennis Girl” (1976) – A Legendary Poster

UPDATE JANUARY 2013 – We now have the 35th Anniversary poster reprints of this image in stock! Available in standard 24″x36″ format, and extra-large Door-Sized format. Order now for delivery anywhere worldwide!

A sad month in the poster world, as word has reached us of the passing of photographer Martin Elliott – the man who earned a small fortune after licensing out the legendary “Tennis Girl” image to the Athena poster company in England back in 1977. Martin, trained at the prestigous Birmingham School of Photography, snapped the photo of his then 18-year-old girlfriend Fiona Butler late one afternoon in 1976, and spent the next few years competing with the classic Farrah Fawcett “Red Bathing Suit” poster for the #1 spot in the medium. Is this really a sports poster? Is it art, or exploitation? We’ll let you decide – but 2-million units sold over the years makes it a true piece of poster, and pop-culture, history.

For those of you interested – as far as we know, the only way to buy this image right now is as a limited-edition signed-and-numbered canvas print from Athena’s successor company, Vivarti. If you are interested in being notified should a moderately-priced open-edition poster reprint become available in the future, click here to send an e-mail and join the waiting list. (Order now! Links to 24″x36″ and Door-Sized editions above).

Ichiro Suzuki earns his place on your Wall of Fame

March 24, 2009

What was I doing, transfixed to the television at 1:00 am EDT this morning, dead tired while nursing a cold, and having two little children to help take care of in less than six hours? I was watching one of the best baseball games I’ve ever seen! After two weeks of trying to follow a lacklustre group of teams playing an incomprehensible tournament format in front of mostly empty stadiums, the World Baseball Classic concluded with a truly amazing Japan-Korea final. The secret? These were actual TEAMS competing, not assembled groups of spring training refugees who’s GMs didn’t forbid them from taking part. After a 9 innings of amazing defense, intense strategy, clutch hitting, and dominant pitching, it was only fitting that the legendary Ichiro Suzuki would break the tie with a remarkable 8-pitch at-bat that resulted in a two-run single and a 5-3 Japanese victory. With his clutch performance, he definitely earned his spot on my Wall-of-Fame! Click on any of the images below for more info on these great Ichiro additions to your wall:
